3M Canada (Perth)
Project Type: Combined Heat and Power Plant Installation
Client: 3M Canada
About This Project

3M Canada operates multiple manufacturing plants across Eastern Ontario. Setting goals to drive sustainability is nothing new for 3M, as they’ve already dramatically reduced their environmental footprint and established the company as a leader in environmental stewardship.
3M has a dedicated energy manager focused on finding energy savings strategies. Having already implemented many of the common energy conservation measures, 3M set its sights on a combined heat and power (CHP) plant. Designing a CHP system that was ideal for 3M was challenging, requiring end-to-end project planning and system implementation.
Challenges
- Multiple trades were required for the complex CHP system.
- 3M needed to be producing electricity in just four months to qualify for the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) incentive.
- The facility is always in operation so scheduling was challenging since interruptions had to be kept to a minimum.
- Improve energy efficiency indexed to net sales by 30%.
- Increase renewable energy to 25% of total electricity use.
- Ensure GHG emissions were 50% below their 2002 baseline.
- Help customers reduce their GHGs by 250 million tons of CO2 equivalent emissions through the use of 3M products
Results
Alliance successfully installed the CHP system within the four-month timeframe with minimal interruptions. The new CHP system now provides 80% of the plant’s power requirements.
- Using recovered heat in production dryers.
- Saving natural gas costs and reducing 3M’s environmental footprint with all the exhaust heat then being used in 3M’s manufacturing processes year-round.
- Using heat generated by the engine jacket cooling to heat the building during cooler months.
- Lowering unit costs through energy savings, making it easier to attract new products and investment
